What is War of the Spark Chronicles?

MTG Arena’s War of the Spark Chronicles is a free-to-play story event. In short, this is Wizards of the Coast’s first attempt at telling the story behind a Magic: The Gathering set via the new possibilities opened up by MTG Arena.

Each week, for five weeks, a different themed game mode will go live alongside an introductory description and video.

War of the Spark Chronicles events do not cost gold and do not punish losses. Every three wins you’ll earn rewards including a small sum of gold and the more important glass card styles for the set’s Planeswalkers.

War of the Spark Chronicles Part 1: Ravnica at War

Week 1 of the War of the Spark Chronicles features the Momir game type. While it’s been available before for a small gold or gem entry fee, this is the first time it’s been available for free.

In Momir, a deck is provided for you. In this specific event, Wizards provides a deck consisting of 12 copies of each basic land color and one copy of each of the 36 Planeswalkers. Momir itself is a token that, when activated, creates a token copy of a random creature which shares the same mana cost that’s currently available in MTG Arena. You must also discard a card to activate Momir.

It’s worth noting that the card it generates does take into account your available mana. If you have no blue mana, no blue creatures will be summoned!

Why Momir? The idea is that as Nicol Bolas opened the Planar Bridge, thousands of creatures emerged, spewing death and destruction into the streets. This all in Ravnica, a bustling city that spans the entire world. Naturally, it’s chaos, and Momir is the epitome of chaos.

War of the Spark Chronicles Part 2: No Escape

Week 2 of the War of the Spark Chronicles features the Pauper game type. While it’s been available before for a small gold or gem entry fee, this is the first time it’s been available for free.

In Pauper you provide your own deck. But the special deckbuilding rule specifies that you can only use common cards. In addition, Wizards has banned Persistent Petitioners from this event.

Why Pauper? Nicol Bolas has trapped all of the Planeswalkers! The army of standard soldiers has no backup and must make due on it’s own!

Start Date: May 31

End Date: June 7

  • 3 Wins – Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor glass card style
  • 6 Wins – 100 Gold

War of the Spark Chronicles Part 3: Storm the Citadel

Once Week 3 of the War of the Spark Chronicles arrive, we swap over to Singleton.

In Singleton, you provide your own deck, but you can not run more then one copy of any card. Basic lands are the only exception.

Why Singleton? The Planeswalkers have begun their counterattack. There can only be one of each of them in existence at the same time, so therefore your deck is limited to just one copy of each card. It could also be a play on the army’s dwindling numbers as Bolas and his armies harvest their enemies.

Start Date: June 7

End Date: June 14

Prizes:

  • 3 Wins – The Wanderer glass card style
  • 6 Wins – 100 Gold
  • 9 Wins – Samut, Tyrant Smasher glass card style
  • 12 Wins – 100 Gold
  • 15 Wins – Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord glass card style

War of the Spark Chronicles Part 4: Commence the Endgame

We’ve almost reached the conclusion! For this part of the experience, Wizards of the Coast has put together an all-new game mode called Counters. In it, you bring your own deck, but at the end of each turn everything Proliferates! That means each of your Planeswalkers gets an extra loyalty counter and any of your creatures with a +1/+1 counter on them will get an additional one. If you have neither of these, that is no Planeswalkers and no creatures, you amass 1 instead.

Why Counters? This is the Planeswalker’s big push. With the Elderspell cast and their backs against the walls, no one is giving up. Everyone is more loyal than ever and there are plenty of tokens to go around.

Start Date: June 14

End Date: June 21

Prizes:

  • 3 Wins – Jaya, Venerated Firemage glass card style
  • 6 Wins – 100 Gold
  • 9 Wins – Dovin, Head of Control glass card style
  • 12 Wins – 100 Gold
  • 15 Wins – Ugin, the Ineffable glass card style

War of the Spark Chronicles Part 5: Gideon’s Sacrifice

This is it! The only one left who can stop Nicol Bolas is Liliana! But her soul belongs to Bolas and defying him means death. She decides to break her contract and forfeit her life, but Gideon comes forward and uses his life force to keep her going. Gideon dies as a result.

The week’s format is Ravnica Constructed. You must build your own deck with only cards from Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Allegiance, and War of the Spark. Gates Ablaze is banned.

Start Date: June 21

End Date: June 28
