The MHW Fun Fright Fest might just be the last new seasonal event in Monster Hunter World. It comes in the wake of the final title update for the game, almost exactly one year after the release of Iceborne. And it’s sure to have a lot of ghoulish goodies for players to hunt for! That’s why we’ve put together a guide to the Fun Fright Fest — including its start and end date, as well as rewards. So let’s take a look!

First off, it’s worth noting that the vast majority of the Fun Fright Fest is exclusive to those who purchased Iceborne (like most of the new seasonal events since the expansion launched). Vanilla MHW players will still get daily Limited Bounties, more login bonuses than average, and in-game sales at shops. And everyone will likely gain access the Autumn Harvest Fest: a repeat of the previous fall event that runs concurrent with the new, 2020 version. But things like the newest gear, layered armor, pendants, and Fun Fright Tickets are exclusive to those with the expansion. That’s interesting, as it somewhat frames Iceborne like a one-time subscription payment to another year or more of MHW content. Although anyone playing Monster Hunter regularly probably has the expansion regardless.

The Fun Fright Fest follows quickly after the fifth Iceborne title update on Friday, Oct 15, 2020. Meanwhile, Title Update 5 (including Fatalis and more) arrived on Oct. 1, 2020. Arch-Tempered Velkhana is also set to release this month on Oct. 15, 2020 alongside the fest.

UPDATE: The official Japanese Monster Hunter Twitter account posted the following tweet, showing off some of the new event quest rewards we can expect during the Fun Fright Fest!

Otherwise, the Fun Fright Fest sounds quite a lot like other seasonal events in MHW. You will get all the aforementioned new features for a limited time. The Lunar Terrace (Seliana’s sauna-themed Gathering Hub) will be decked out with a Halloween aesthetic — just as the Celestial Pursuit got makeovers before it. The same goes for your Handler. You will be able to “preview” her in a spooky devil costume with unique hair throughout the event. It’s called the Cute Demoness outfit. Presumably, it will also be available for purchase with real money after the Fun Fright Fest ends.

As we’ve seen in the past, Capcom listed two different kinds of special crafting materials for the event: the Fun Fright Ticket and the VIP Fun Fright Ticket. The first is acquired easily through daily bounties, and used to craft the “normal” armor with stats and Decoration slots. Whereas the other is used for Layered Armor and other cosmetics, like in-game furniture.

The new gameplay-relevant armor set is called the Demonlord Alpha+. Also unlike some events in base MHW, it will come with a special bonus that makes it easier for you to farm VIP Fun Fright Tickets as special rewards, or for helping Low/High Rank players through the game. They are not guaranteed drops! But wearing all five pieces of the Demonlord armor will give you a pretty good chance. That might give players a real incentive to actually use the autumnal armor a bit! That’s especially true since you can trade in extra Fun Fright Tickets and VIP Fun Fright Tickets for Melding Tickets. Previously, seasonal armor was only deeply situational.

MHW Fun Fright Fest Demonlord Armor & Weapons

The armor itself sports more of that Universal Studios monster vibe — pulling from cheesy vampire and demon designs. Both the male and female versions are dark and glowing Halloween costumes. It’s a pretty fitting addition to the gloomy gear you can also get from Fatalis.

That probably won’t be all, though! Most seasonal fests include novelty weapons and more cosmetics via new event quests. Only this time Capcom didn’t lay out the specifics. Of course, it’s possible there won’t be any new event quests coinciding with this update, but the developers implied otherwise.

Gold Melding Ticket & Guild Alchemy

In addition to all the extra gear, the Fun Fright Fest is an opportunity to stock up on the basics. Specifically, you can farm high-level Decorations with ease! You just need a Gold Melding Ticket or two. These can be acquired from the Steamworks as a new, daily bonus during the event, as well as created at the Elder Melder with 10 or more VIP Fun Fright Tickets.

Technically there are three classes of Melding Ticket. You can get a Steel Melding Ticket or a Silver Melding Ticket from normal matches at the Steamworks. These produce free Decorations at the Elder Melder under the new option called “Guild Alchemy.” You get one Decoration per ticket, but the rarity of the jewels is determined by the rarity of the ticket. Steel ones give out very basic rewards, while Silver ones provide rarer, often extremely good “basic” jewels, like Attack Boost.

For my first Gold Melding Ticket, I received a Blaze Jewel 4. It was the first Level 4 elemental damage Decoration I’ve ever received in MHW. And there are sure to be plenty more goodies you can earn if you’re dedicated!

Altogether, it seems like Capcom is having a lot of fun with the MHW Fun Fright Fest. It’s a fitting way to ring in the final update for this generation of Monster Hunter. We’ll keep you posted on the specifics as they become available!
