The next horrifying installment of the Resident Evil series has finally arrived. Continuing the story of Ethan Winters following the events of Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village sees our titular hero venture into a mysterious eastern European town to save his kidnapped baby. Throughout your journey, Ethan will encounter all sorts of horrific monsters, eccentric characters, puzzles, and familiar faces. Pulling inspiration from previous entries, Resident Evil Village mixes both horror and action. Taking direct inspiration from Resident Evil 4, Village’s opening gameplay segment sees Ethan defending himself against an endless onslaught of terrifying lycans. This can be a pretty tricky section, so here are some tips for surviving these waves of monsters.
How to Survive the Lycan Village Attack
It’s important to note that this segment will not begin until you leave the house with the radio in it after the first lycan attack. Once you temporarily ward off the werewolves, head back outside and follow the blood trail. When you hear the screams of the lycans the endless attack will begin. Quickly make your way into the house in front of you (shown above) and shove the dresser in front of the door. On the table is a shotgun, you will also find some supplies like handgun bullets in the dresser by the door. Hold out here for a few seconds and only take out the werewolves directly in your path. It’s better to save as much ammo as possible. Remember to press L1 (PlayStation)/ LB (Xbox) to block any incoming attacks!
In the next room, you can use the ladder to escape into the basement, but I recommend equipping the shotgun since there’s almost no room to maneuver down here. When you escape you’ll be facing a large house (shown below), which will be your main base for now. Quickly head inside, shove the dresser in front of the door, and grab any items inside. Lycans can come through the window on the left and through the door so be ready to repel any that get inside. If things get too chaotic, take the ladder to the roof. While it’s more exposed, you can see the lycans coming and prepare to defend yourself. When they start to overwhelm you here (usually when there’s 2-3 right by you), jump off the roof.
Now head up the road to the left and wait till a bunch of lycans gather around the giant red barrel. A single bullet to the barrel will cause it to explode and kill any enemies around it. Use this to quickly escape and run down the road towards the home with the red gate. I don’t recommend going inside the house, but the yard is quite big and gives you some room to maneuver. By now a giant lycan with a hammer will join the fray. Do not bother fighting him. He deals a ton of damage via his overhead attack and you should avoid him as much as possible. Keep kiting the lycans through the houses above, using the roof of the home on the hill to make a quick escape.
Eventually, Ethan will take an arrow in the leg and become swarmed by enemies. However, right before they finish the job some bells will call the monsters off. Once this is over, I recommend scouring the land around you for any supplies you may have missed. There is a decent amount of crafting materials that should let you restock on bullets.
