Destiny 2’s Season of the Chosen is officially live, so grab your weapon of choice and get ready to face the Cabal horde. Revolving around stopping Emperor Calus’ daughter Caiatl from uniting the Cabal, players will need to take down various champions that are vying for a seat on her War Counsel. Similar to previous seasons, Bungie has introduced a new seasonal loot grind that will have you participating in the new activity, Battlegrounds. Tying into this are two new items (Cabal Gold and Hammer Charges) you’ll need to collect if you want to unlock Season 13 gear and the ability to Focus Umbral Engrams.
How to Unlock Hammer Charges
The only way to unlock Hammer Charges is by breaking open one of the Tribute Chests at the end of the Battlegrounds activity. Found in the Vanguard playlist, you’ll unlock this mode about halfway through the opening seasonal quest. Once playable, you will need to acquire 14 Cabal Gold to fuel your quest item, the Hammer of Proving, so you can shatter one of the Tribute Chests. Cabal Gold is obtained by just playing the game and is rewarded at the end of core activities like Strikes, Gambit, Crucible, Public Events, and the Blind Well.
Upon obtaining 14 Cabal Gold, open up your Hammer of Proving and slot it into the only open square. This will give you a single use of the hammer at the end of a Battlegrounds activity. Now go play this mode and upon beating it you’ll be given a choice of three chests. You can only pick one, so approach one of the chests and open it up. Your Guardian will triumphantly bash their hammer into the chest causing the rewards to spill out. One of those rewards will be a single Hammer Charge. Unfortunately, you cannot stockpile Hammer Charges, as the quest item only allows you to store a maximum of three charges. This can be upgraded as you unlock more enhancements for the hammer at H.E.L.M.
You will use these Hammer Charges when focusing your Umbral Engrams to narrow down the possible rewards. The most tedious aspect of this will be grinding for Cabal Gold, but thankfully, you can alleviate this by just doing Heroic Public Events. I know it’s not exactly exciting, but completing one with the Heroic modifier active rewarded 8 Cabal Gold. Given how fast you can typically go through these, this is going to be the best source for farming gold. I strongly encourage you to use your Hammer Charges liberally since you can only store three. There’s no point in trying to horde them since you’ll be in the Battlegrounds activity a lot this season.
What’s New in Season of the Chosen?
What’s coming to Destiny 2 over the next three months? For starters, there’s a new seasonal activity called Battlegrounds and, thank the Traveler, it’s a three-player matchmade experience. No more roaming around in patrol hoping people show up to your party. There’s also a new area in the Tower called the Hub for Emergency Logistics and Maneuvers, or HELM. Basically, it’s your new area for coordinating Vanguard operations with the “War Table Seasonal vendor” who we thought was Zavala, but that probably can’t be the case.
You can also use the Prismatic Recaster here and decode your Umbral Engrams at the Umbral Decoder. In a new move, the help document also says players can manage their vault and get items from the Postmaster here! For those who like events, Trials of Osiris is back on February 12 with new armor sets and weapons to chase. Iron Banner is another routine staple and the Guardian Games will be hosted in late April. Will the Titans come out victorious once again?
