Deathloop Slab Guide – How to Get New Slab & Slab Upgrades

The groovy new action/adventure game Deathloop has finally been released. Developed by famed developers, Arkane Studios, Deathloop is all about attempting to kill eight targets in a single day. This is easier said than done since death will send you back to the start of the day. Taking inspiration from the rogue-lite genre, Deathloop is all about dying and using the information gathered to improve your performance. One of the biggest draws to playing Deathloop is experimenting with the different abilities and enhances you can give these skills. Called “slabs,” these are powerful tools that allow Colt to teleport, take down multiple targets at once, go invisible, and more.

Here’s how to unlock slabs and their corresponding upgrades:

How to Get Slabs

The only way to get slabs is by killing either Juliana when she is using that slab or killing a specific Visionary. The latter is the most common method, as almost every single Visionary has a slab associated with them. Slaying one of these Visionaries will cause them to not only drop some trinkets and Residuum but the slab they use. For example, if you kill Charlie he will drop the Shift slab on the ground. Before we get into more details here is a breakdown of every slab and which Visionary is associated with it.

  • Shift – Charlie
  • Aether – Egor
  • Havoc – Fia
  • Karnesis – Aleksis
  • Nexus – Harriet

Colt can only use two slabs at the same time, so you will want to pick which abilities gel with your playstyle. For example, if you want to go in guns blazing then use Havoc and Karnesis. Alternatively, Shift and Aether are terrific for stealth players who don’t want make too much noise. Colt also has his own personal slab, which cannot be removed, which gives him two extra lives per level. This means Colt can die twice in a level before the loop officially resets. You can also gain slabs from killing Juliana, but what slabs she arrives with will be totally random if you’re offline. So if you’re lucky killing her may net you an ability you’ve never seen before or it could be one you just earned. If you’re online, what slab she drops entirely depends on what the player is carrying into their invasions.

How to get Slab Upgrades

SLab upgrades follow a similar pattern, as they will start dropping from Visionaries and Juliana after you already acquired the core slab. Meaning, if you picked up Aether from Egor, any time you kill him going forward will cause an upgrade for this slab to drop. The same goes for the other Visionaries, so if you want upgrades for your favorite slab get ready to start grinding. What upgrade the Visionary actually drops is random, as there are multiple upgrades per slab. So you may need to kill someone multiple times before you find a slab upgrade you really enjoy.

Unsurprisingly, the rule for slab upgrades is exactly the same if you kill Juliana. When she dies and drops a slab, if you already own that slab it will be an upgrade instead. This makes it pretty advantageous to kill her whenever you get the chance since she can drop a necessary upgrade. Just make sure to infuse them with Residuum when you exit an area, otherwise, it’ll be lost forever!
