Animal Crossing: New Horizons Villagers Guide – How to Get More, Kick Them, Max Villager Limit

Great news, villagers! Animal Crossing is back! With Animal Crossing: New Horizons it’s time, once again, to gather materials, build your house, and learn the ins and outs of the game. You’ll start the game off with two villagers also hoofing it in tents of their own. But what if you don’t like them? Can you kick them off the island? How do you make villagers leave? How do you get more villagers? And is there a cap to the number of villagers you can have? Our Animal Crossing: New Horizons Villagers Guide has all the details you want to know!

How to Get More Villagers in Animal Crossing

Two villagers doesn’t make an island. If you want more friends, you’ll need to use some Nook Miles Tickets to visit other deserted islands. The main player on the Switch will encounter a single villager on the mystery island. They can be invited to your island simply by talking to them. You’re under no obligation to do so, however. If it’s not someone you want to settle down with, don’t invite them.

You have to do this three times before any of them can actually move onto your island.

Once you’ve invited three villagers, Tom Nook will talk to you about placing down their houses and ask you to prepare for their arrival. Each will also need three interior and three exterior items so they aren’t moving into a completely empty building.

After you’ve done this and Resident Services has been upgraded to the full building, instead of the tent it starts off in, you can pay Nook to create plots of land for future residents. That way, if you invite villagers to come live on your island, they’ll already have a place to go.

At this point, Nook will also ask you to build a campsite. This is where villagers can come visit your island. You can talk to them repeatedly until you get a chance to encourage or discourage them from settling on the island.

What Is the Maximum Number of Villagers on One Island?

You can only have ten villagers on the island, not including yourself. We assume that additional players on the same Switch do take up one of those slots. So if three people are all settled on the same island and using one Switch, you’d only be able to have eight villagers. If you can confirm this, let us know!

Can You Make Villagers Leave?

You can! Though the whole process is easier once Resident Services has been upgraded to the full building. Before that, you should just ignore the villager as much as possible. Don’t talk to them multiple days in a row. When they’re fully disgruntled, a cloud will stay over their head. This is an indicator that it’s a good time to talk to them. They’ll ask you if they should leave the island and you can encourage them to do so.

When Resident Services is built, Isabelle will show up and you can “Discuss a Resident,” and complain about them. Doing this enough will also prompt them to ask you if they should leave.

And that’s it! Hopefully this helps you get settled into your new Animal Crossing: New Horizons island!
