Ruben Fleischer, the director behind Venom and Zombieland was rumored to be joining the Uncharted movie as director, but it’s not a rumor anymore. It’s real. But rather than get attached to another director who might up and and abandon us again as we all wait for this movie to ever get off the ground, let’s talk about the new casting in the form of Antonio Banderas, who you might know from movies like Desperado, Assassins, Zorro, or Shrek depending on when you were born.
Variety reports that Fleischer and Banderas’ involvement is officially written in stone, but there’s no concrete information who Banderas will be portraying, but it’s likely an original character, considering the movie is meant to take place before the events of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, so is probably not someone we know from Naughty Dog’s games.
Along with Banderas, both Grey’s Anatomy actress Sophia Ali and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Tati Gabrielle are also signed on to join the movie, but Variety’s sources also have no information on who they will be playing alongside Tom Holland’s Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg’s Victor “Sully” Sullivan.

For the movie’s sake, hopefully this means that it can finally get off the ground. After losing seven (7) directors over the many years it’s been in various levels of production, the Uncharted movie is currently slated to hit theaters on March 5 of next year, assuming no more major personnel shake ups have to happen between now and then. Holland said in an interview with IGN that shooting is set to begin this month.
While the specifics of what the movie will entail haven’t been revealed yet, Holland is set to play a younger version of Nathan Drake set after the flashback sequences in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, showing the character’s growth from streetsmart thief to the treasure hunter he comes to be in the games. Wahlberg will play Sully, the mentor and father figure of the series, presumably showing him the ropes, as he’s a seasoned professional by the time he and Drake meet.
The movie will be the first released project for PlayStation Productions, the new branch of Sony dedicated specifically to creating TV shows and movies based on PlayStation properties.
