The Nioh Collection Is Coming to PlayStation 5 in February 2021

Nioh 2's story is coming to a close.

On Friday, Team Ninja Creative Director Tom Lee announced The Nioh Collection, which will be making its way to the PlayStation 5 in February next year. The Nioh Collection will have both Nioh and Nioh 2, and their DLC, available on the new generation PlayStation hardware.

Nioh 2′s third and final DLC expansion, “The Last Samurai,” will be released on Dec. 17, 2020. As the protagonist, you will be going back to the past as a Visitor for the third and final time — to the place your mother spoke of when you were young. You’ll be uncovering the truth of Otakemaru’s past, Sohayamaru, and the first samurai, accumulating in the end of the protagonist’s long journey.

To celebrate the series, four versions of Nioh and Nioh 2 will be released on February 5, 2021. They are:

  • Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition (available on PlayStation 4)
  • Nioh 2 Remastered – The Complete Edition (available on PlayStation 5)
  • Nioh Remastered – The Complete Edition (available on PlayStation 5)
  • The Nioh Collection (available on PlayStation 5)

That might seem a bit confusing at first, so let’s break that down real quick. Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition will include Nioh 2 and all three of its DLC expansions for the PlayStation 4. The equivalent of that on the PlayStation 5 will be Nioh 2 Remastered, which will have the visual and technological benefits of the new hardware. The first Nioh will also get this treatment on the PlayStation 5 in the form of Nioh Remastered. If you haven’t played or purchased either game, and you want to play the whole series on the PlayStation 5, you’re gonna want the bundle that is The Nioh Collection.

If you have Nioh 2 on the PlayStation 4 and want to finish the story on your new PlayStation 5, Lee says you have two options:

  • Players that own Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition on the PlayStation 4 can upgrade to Nioh 2 Remastered – The Complete Edition on the PlayStation 5 for free.
  • Players that own Nioh 2 on the PlayStation 4 can upgrade to the base game – Nioh 2 Remastered on PlayStation 5, and receive the PlayStation 5 version of the DLC expansions that they owned on the PlayStation 4.

Nioh Remastered, Nioh 2 Remastered, and The Nioh Collection will all have support for “4K resolution for crystal clear visuals, up to 120 FPS gameplay for silky smooth combat, ultra-fast load times, and the ability to transfer your data from the PS4 versions to pick up your journey right where you left off.”

It’s worth noting that, “Blu-ray discs are not compatible with the PS5 Digital Edition.” The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition only allows you to play digital games and not physical copies. “If you own PS4 Blu-ray discs, you will not be able to use them with the PS5 Digital Edition console, including to redeem offers to upgrade a PS4 game to a PS5 version. You can, however, upgrade eligible digital games.”

Pre-orders for all these titles at the PlayStation Store will begin at midnight on Friday, November 20, 2020, depending on whenever that is for your timezone.

“While many of you may be sad to see the story of Nioh 2 arriving at its final chapter (I know I am), I’d like to thank all of our fans that have been by our side along this crazy journey from the release of the first Nioh right up until this milestone,” writes Lee. “On behalf of Team Ninja, I want to express our sincere gratitude for supporting the Nioh series and our team through this long and wonderful ride. As a token of our appreciation, we thought there was no better way to celebrate the Nioh series, one very near and dear to our hearts, than remastering the entire story for both veterans and new players alike to enjoy utilizing the latest hardware.”

Nioh 2 Complete Edition will also be coming to PC, as confirmed by Koei Tecmo America on Twitter. The Steam version will have “4K Ultra-HD support, ultra wide-screen compatibility, HDR monitor support, 144Hz monitor support, consistent 120 FPS on compatible systems, and full mouse and keyboard customization.” It will have an exclusive item, as well.
