After announcing that it would be making a sequel to the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie shortly after the original premiered in theaters last year, Paramount is making Sonic the Hedgehog 2 official, and the film will be released in theaters (god willing) on April 8 of next year.
The film is still over a year out, so there’s no footage in the announcement video, but it does show the logo, which makes reference to Miles “Tails” Prower, the blue blur’s best friend and partner in crime. Tails made a surprise appearance at the end of the first film during its post-credits scene, which showed the flying fox arriving on Earth in search for Sonic. While the logo seems to imply the story will be primarily about Sonic and Tails’ relationship, it’s also been reported that Knuckles the Echidna will make an appearance as well. Given that echidnas were shown in an antagonistic role in the first movie, it’s likely Sonic and Knuckles will be at odds for at least some of the film.
Ben Schwartz portrays this iteration of Sonic, but it’s unclear who will be voicing Tails in the sequel, as Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who played the character for his brief appearance in the post-credits scene, may be in the midst of what appears to be a mass exodus of voice talent for the franchise. News of a cast shakeup began last month when Roger Craig Smith, who voiced Sonic in most media for a decade, confirmed he would no longer be portraying the character in the future. This was followed by news of Amy Rose actor Cindy Robinson confirming her own departure “with [her] brilliant compadres.” O’Shaughnessey was asked on Twitter earlier this month if she’d be voicing Tails in the upcoming Sonic Netflix series Sonic Prime, after which she confirmed she wouldn’t. This wasn’t direct confirmation that she would be leaving the role entirely, but given every one else’s departures, it seems likely.

Despite all of this, Mike Pollock, who has voiced series villain Dr. Eggman since 2005, will maintain his role. The character is played by Jim Carrey in the live action films.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies aren’t a direct adaptation of any of the games. Rather than directly bring the source material to the big screen, the movies follow a version of Sonic who ended up in our world, lives with a cop named Tom, and goes on a wacky adventure across the United States of America. While it has some extremely dated references like Sonic flossing, the movie is actually pretty alright.
