Knuckles Looks Ready to Square Up on Sonic Movie Sequel Set

Hand over those Master Emeralds.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to last year’s live-action Sonic movie, is currently shooting at Fort Langley, and while Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles will be CG when the movie comes to theaters next April, the cast and crew have to have something to stand in for the anthropomorphic trio. So let’s all take a moment to look at these fucking dweebs:

These props act as stand-ins for all three characters, and give on-screen actors like James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, who are returning from the original movie to play Tom and Maddie Wachowski respectively, a sense of where they need to be looking when they’re talking to Sonic and friends. The props also is one of the only confirmations that Knuckles is going to be in the movie at all. Tails made an appearance in the first movie’s post-credits scene, so he was always a given. Knuckles, meanwhile, has mostly been rumored up to this point. Right now, we don’t know who will be providing a voice for Tails or Knuckles, and it’s hard to even speculate because the Sonic franchise is going through a bit of voice turnover right now.

The inclusion of Knuckles means the video game cast is growing for the film series. As a Team Dark fan, I’m hopeful that in a future movie we might see Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat, and E-123 Omega, but I’d be surprised if the antiheroes make an appearance in a movie where they’re not the main villains. And Jim Carrey’s Doctor Eggman already has that role on lock this time around. There’s always the third movie, I suppose. But even then, I’d be surprised if we see any of those baddies before we see Sonic’s love interest Amy Rose show up.
