Rumor: Horizon Zero Dawn Is Planned to Be a Trilogy

It will possibly be one of the few franchises led by a woman in video games.

In a report from VGC citing multiple sources close to Sony Interactive Entertainment, it has been said that Horizon Zero Dawn is slated to be a trilogy — and that the first game’s sequel is already under considerable development for the PlayStation 5.

As of February 2019, Guerrilla Games reported that Horizon Zero Dawn had sold 10 million units, so it’s only been expected that it would be getting a sequel.

It seems that sequel was originally planned for Sony’s current-generation console, but has been in development for the PlayStation 5 as of some time now. “Horizon Zero Dawn 2 started development soon after the first game’s successful release, sources said. Initially, the game was planned for PlayStation 4. However, it’s thought that development has now entirely shifted focus to Sony’s next-generation console,” says the VGC report.

As for details on the game, the VGC article states that sources have said Horizon Zero Dawn 2 is “gigantic” in scope with an even larger world and additional freedom for exploration than the original. That’s no easy task, for the original is known for its enormous and gorgeous explorable vistas. I’d personally go as far as to say it’s the most beautiful game I’ve played, so this possible information is exciting. Though an already big game getting bigger and making use of further advanced technology isn’t surprising.

What does come as a surprise is the part of the report that mentions sources said there will be a co-op feature — “although it’s not clear if this is delivered via the main story or a separate mode. At one point Guerilla was planning to release a standalone co-op game preview, with progress carrying over to the later, full version.” Whether those plans are still in place is currently unknown.

The report indicates that, although Horizon Zero Dawn is an entirely single-player game, there were plans to incorporate co-op features from the beginning. However, those plans were scrapped for a tighter focus on other features.

In March, it was confirmed that the once Sony-exclusive game would be ported to PC, which… was not received all too happily by some people. Nonetheless, Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition is currently slated for a summer release on PC. It won’t take long after the PC port for fans of the game to get their hands on a brand-new Horizon Zero Dawn comic series. The series will take place after the events of the first game and will presumably serve as a bridge between it and its sequel. The first issue is priced at $3.99 and will be released on Aug. 5, 2020.

If this report turns out to be true, this will make Horizon Zero Dawn one of the few franchises in video games led by a woman. Horizon Zero Dawn was both a commercial and critical success, so many people have been waiting for the chance to play as Aloy and fight mechanical beasts again. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any additional reports and news.
