It’s been close to five months since Persona 4 Arena Ultimax launched on modern platforms with delay-based netcode. Atlus said before the fighting game was ported to PS4, PC, and Switch it would be implementing rollback netcode post launch. My friends, that day has finally come. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax has rollback netcode on PS4 and PC, but the Switch version will continue to use the same delay-based netcode used in the original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions.
Atlus announced Persona 4 Arena Ultimax’s new rollback netcode at the EVO 2022 fighting game tournament, which is taking place in Las Vegas this weekend. For those who don’t know what this means (and it is some fighting game inside baseball, so I wouldn’t blame you), delay-based netcode is widely considered inferior to rollback netcode, as it sends player inputs between online games with a slight delay, then processes and delivers them to the other player’s game within a specific window, which can be fine if both players have a decent internet connection. Unfortunately, the internet infrastructure of the world isn’t always so accommodating, and the way this netcode delivers inputs can greatly affect a player’s reaction time if it’s anything less than perfect. Meanwhile, rollback netcode is persistent, predicts inputs, and adjusts accordingly for as seamless a match as possible. For a more extensive breakdown, check out Ars Technica’s write-up on the difference between the two.
A thrilling announcement from EVO 2022 – the Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Rollback Netcode update is now available on Steam and PlayStation 4!

More Persona:
- Any Live-Action Persona Adaptation Should Be a New Story
- Dear Modders: Help Me Date All the Guys in Persona on PC
- Five Years Later, Hope is at the Heart of Persona 5
If you’re looking for more Persona but fighting games aren’t your jam, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal are all about to launch on just about every platform. The series has primarily existed on PlayStation consoles, but ports are coming to PC, Xbox, and Switch. Which is a pretty big deal, considering how popular those games have gotten over the years. Now more people will get to experience the stories of S.E.E.S., the Investigation Team, and the Phantom Thieves.
