On the fourth anniversary of Nier Automata‘s release, Square Enix has announced a new milestone for the critical darling’s sales numbers. Across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Nier Automata has sold over five million copies.
It's a double celebration ????
Since launching in Japan four years ago today, #NieR:Automata has surpassed 5.5 million shipments and digital sales worldwide, and we'd like to thank every single moose-riding, mackerel-eating, machine-hacking, pod-fishing one of you – thank you! pic.twitter.com/aM1ujehCNS

To put that into perspective, Nier Automata has outsold about eight times the original Nier. It is far and away the most successful game from Yoko Taro and also the most successful title from developer PlatinumGames, which has put out releases like Bayonetta and Astral Chain.
While a sequel to Automata seems inevitable, publisher Square Enix seems keen to instead have fans take revisit Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139, a remake of the first title in the series which you can listen to us discuss on the latest 99 Potions, and Nier Reincarnation, a mobile title that does not yet have a western release date.
With a new generation, perhaps the Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames are eager to begin work on a new console game, as well.
