DICE Announces Battlefield Mobile Game, Says Next Mainline Entry is Coming in 2021

The series is heading to phones and tablets for the first time.

It’s been three years since Battlefield V, and EA has confirmed the next Battlefield game is coming in 2021. But according to developer DICE’s latest announcement, it looks like the series is also going somewhere it’s not been before: mobile devices.

In a blog posted on EA’s official site, DICE General Manager Oskar Gabrielson spoke a little on both this year’s mainline Battlefield game coming to console and PC, and the mobile project that will launch sometime in 2022. Much of it is the general marketing word salad of “epic scale. All-out military warfare. Crazy, unexpected moments. Game-changing destruction. Massive battles, packed with more players and mayhem than ever before,” but he also says that the game will be revealed “soon.” Whether that’s before a probable EA Play presentation in June around E3 time or during the event is yet to be seen.

On the mobile game, Gabrielson said the Battlefield that comes to phones and tablets will be a standalone game wholly separate from whatever DICE is working on for PC and consoles. Midnight Star studio Industrial Toys is acting as primary developer on the project, and is “working closely” with the folks at DICE.

Make no mistake, this is a standalone game,” Gabrielson said in the blog post. “A completely different game from the one we’re making for console and PC, designed specifically for the mobile platform. It’s being built from the ground up by iToys to make Battlefield-on-the-go a reality and you can expect a fully-fledged, skill-based experience. This mobile game is now entering a testing period ahead of launching next year, so expect more details to come.
