Netflix and Pokemon seem to have a pretty good relationship. Not only has the majority of the animated series been made available on the streaming service, but earlier this year the dub of the Pokemon: The First Movie remake titled Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution premiered exclusively on the service back in February. Well, it seems the relationship is escalating, as Pokemon Journeys: The Series, the new season of the anime, is going to be streaming exclusively through Netflix in June.
On June 12, the first twelve episodes will be available on Netflix, complete with an English dub. New episodes will be added quarterly, while the show will maintain its weekly new episode in Japan. Well, once the show is back in production, as it is currently in hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic complicating production.
As of this writing, 22 episodes of Pokemon Journeys have aired in Japan, so the following ten episodes will likely be coming next quarter around September. Over the years, the Pokemon animated series has aired on different channels in the west, from Cartoon Network, Disney, and even Kids’ WB back in the day.
“With their tremendous reach and ability for fans to enjoy content anytime and anywhere, Netflix is the ideal partner to premiere new episodes of the beloved animated Pokémon series in the U.S.,” said Pokemon Company Senior VP of International Business Emily Arons in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We can’t wait for Pokémon fans of all ages to continue discovering the spirit of adventure and friendship in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, our newest season coming to Netflix this June.”

Pokemon Journeys first premiered in Japan back in November, the same week Pokemon Sword & Shield launched on the Switch. While the animated series typically focuses on the setting of the latest game, Pokemon Journeys follows longtime protagonists Ash Ketchum and Pikachu as they travel to all eight regions in the Pokemon universe. They’re accompanied by a new character named Go, who is trying to capture a Pokemon “no one has seen before,” referring to Mew, who many people have actually seen several times. This includes Ash. I wonder if he will break that to Go at some point.

In other Pokemon news, Pokemon Go has received some updates to help people keep up with the game while staying indoors, as it’s designed for people to play while traveling or on walks. Pokemon Sword & Shield have been getting periodic updates with new Pokemon to catch since launch, but developer Game Freak has announced that the games’ first major update called “The Isle of Armor” is coming in June, so it sounds like Pokemon fans will have a lot to look forward in that month on a few fronts. The second DLC pack titled “The Crown of Tundra” is coming a bit later in the fall. Game Freak says these updates will be significant enough that the studio is opting to not make a third game in this generation of Pokemon, but this does mean folks won’t have to play entire games over again to see new content.
