Naughty Dog Revealing New Last of Us Content this Weekend

Multiplayer? A TV series tease? Let's speculate.

September 26 is a date known to many fans of The Last of Us as the day the duology’s cordyceps fungus began to overtake humanity and turn the world into the post-apocalypse we know it as. But it’s also the date that developer Naughty Dog has taken upon itself to dub “The Last of Us Day” (formerly known as Outbreak Day, but considering current events, ya know) usually accompanied by new merchandise. While this year does include the new merch that Sony and Naughty Dog put out yesterday, the companies also seem to be hinting at more in store for the actual date.

Through a post on the PlayStation Blog, Naughty Dog rolled out a fair bit of new merch with shirts, jackets, guitar accessories, and confirmed that $2000 guitar replica will be available in Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. But it also confirmed the studio is planning on showing off “all-new content” on September 26 at 9 a.m. Pacific. Whatever this entails will be posted to the official webpage for The Last of Us Day.

Since there’s nothing specific on what’s being shown, it’s time to put on our speculation hats. It could be one of a few things. The most obvious would be a proper look at the long-discussed multiplayer mode that was removed from the base game of The Last of Us Part II. Based on some job listings, it seems like the mode might have been made into a standalone game, and it was surprisingly absent from this month’s PlayStation Showcase. But if Naughty Dog wanted to save it for its own super special day, that would make some sense.

Also on the table is something regarding the upcoming HBO show starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as main characters Joel and Ellie. The show has been in production in Calgary since July, and while the show’s certainly got a way’s to go (production is scheduled until June of next year) some kind of teaser doesn’t seem out of the question.

Or, it could be something else entirely that we don’t know about yet. Just don’t get your hopes up for a look at a possible Last of Us Part III, as Naughty Dog isn’t making that yet.
