Okay, I know that over-the-top, heinous violence is the trademark of the Mortal Kombat series, and it’s why I’ve been more than happy to stick with the Injustice games for my own NetherRealm fix (even if I haven’t forgiven them for putting in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Injustice 2 over John Constantine, who once dated King Shark). But man, how dope would it be if we could replace all the gruesome Fatalities with the Friendships that are coming to Mortal Kombat 11 instead?
For the uninitiated, Friendships are finishing moves that forgo the usual pornographic violence that is synonymous with the Mortal Kombat name, and they’re making their debut in Mortal Kombat 11 in the “Aftermath” DLC pack, which is going live next week on May 26. These alternative attacks shake things up by making things humorous and wholesome rather than bloody and gross, and if you get queasy at the gratuitousness of it all like I do they’re a nice reprieve from the nausea. NetherRealm released a new trailer for the “Aftermath” DLC today that features a montage of several of these, including Scorpion hugging a huge teddy bear, Sub Zero selling ice cream on a bike, and even some of the guest characters like The Terminator just living his best life on his motorcycle.

“Aftermath” is bringing Friendships, but that’s just a bullet point on the list of things the $40 expansion is bringing to Mortal Kombat 11. Along with these decidedly nicer finishing moves, “Aftermath” will include a new story expansion that focuses on characters who were absent the first time around. Along with the new story content, additions to the roster include Fujin and Sheeva, as well as changing the way you’ll actually fight by adding environmental fatalities associated with different stages. Oh, and also RoboCop is a playable character now too, because who doesn’t love a guest character showing up in their fighting game of choice? (Me. I don’t like guest characters showing up in my fight game of choice.)
Despite the original event being cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, EVO is still going to live on this year as a digital event, which is sure to please every competitor who has a real fun time playing fighting games through an internet connection. Mortal Kombat 11 is going to be featured at the event when it begins in July, although Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was not so lucky, which you can probably thank Nintendo’s less-than-stellar online network for, because the thought of watching and playing a Super Smash Bros. tournament taking place online is not exactly biggest fighting game tournament in the world make. But I guess we’re about to be seeing how all of these games’ netcodes hold up under monumental pressure, huh?
