Today, director Masahiro Sakurai revealed the next playable character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Min Min from Arms, and she’ll be available next week on June 29. What better way to keep your opponents six feet away during quarantine than by having long, spring-powered arms to fight with?
The stream was filmed in Sakurai’s home back in early May due to the coronavirus, meaning some of the usual character reveal antics and the in-office set were off the table, but the reveal trailer featured a beautiful cel-shaded aesthetic with different Arms characters all fighting over the coveted Smash Bros. invitation letter before Min Min swooped in and took it for herself. There was also a bit with Captain Falcon and Kirby eating ramen at a diner while Min Min watched in secret.
Sakurai says that integrating Arms and its long-ranged close-quarters combat into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was a challenge, but Min Min is able to use her extendable arms to deliver deadly smash attacks from a relatively safe distance. This means she can avoid things like close-range counters, but if you try to execute these attacks in close proximity to enemies, you’ll leave yourself open for attacks, as they have a longer recovery time.
Her long arms can also be used to keep enemies off the stage, as well as deploy ranged attacks further away from her body than most other characters can. Overall, her playstyle appears to be most focused on covering as much space on the stage as possible, and if you’re playing on the Final Destination Style stages used in competitive play, that can be deadly, so it will be interesting to see where she falls in tier lists and the meta in general.

As most DLC character in Super Smash Bros. do, Min Min is bringing a fair bit of Arms content to the game, including a new stage based on Spring Stadium and 18 music tracks from the game.
Along with Min Min, it was announced that new Mii Fighter costumes will be coming to Ultimate, including ones based on characters like Ninjara, Heihachi from Tekken, Callie and Marie from Splatoon, and the Vault Boy from Fallout, all of which will come next week on June 29.
Sakurai also revealed that the Joker (Persona 5) and Hero (Dragon Quest) amiibo figures will be coming in fall of this year, as well as said Nintendo will be releasing amiibo for every DLC character, but says they may be in relatively limited supply.
Min Min is the latest in a long line of DLC characters to come to the already sizable roster, including recent additions like Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury. Unfortunately, the odds of the long-requested fan favorite Waluigi ever being playable seem to get lower and lower as time goes by. But stranger things have happened in this series…like Sans from Undertale being a Mii Fighter costume.
