After announcing the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition remaster back in November, Bioware has officially unveiled the collection in all its 4K glory. The remastered trilogy will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 14, rather than the originally leaked March date. And while this will finally put the “will it be a remake or a remaster” debate to rest (despite Bioware saying as much when it announced the thing), there are a few notable updates to the games in the new package.
As previously confirmed, the collection will come with all the DLC for each game (with the exception of Mass Effect’s “Pinnacle Station,” which was lost due to file corruption years ago), including story content, cosmetic items, and downloadable party members. Across the board, each game has been given a bit of a visual update, though the original Mass Effect has seen the most change, with updated textures and models to give it a slightly more modern feel. Updates have also been made to the UI and character customization to keep things as universal as possible, including the adding the Mass Effect 3 default face for Female Commander Shepard through the whole game.
Bioware has confirmed the remasters will be making technical updates specifically, meaning there likely won’t be any updates on cut queer romances, or addendums made to ones that were eventually added in Mass Effect 3. Nor will there be any changes to the ending if you’re still mad about that nine years after the fact.
Bioware is also selling a collector’s edition of sorts called the Mass Effect Legendary Cache, which includes the following according to the developer’s store:
- 1 Mass Effect Legendary Edition Metal Game Case
- 1 Morality Spinner Pin
- 1 N7 Acceptance Letter
- 2 Canvas Art Prints
- Comes in a full color custom box featuring the game’s key art
You’ll notice that doesn’t include the actual Legendary Edition, so if you want all of that nonsense plus the game, you’ll be out both the cost of the collection and the $149.99. So use this knowledge as you will and be a responsible, informed purchaser of video games.

The Legendary Edition comes a few months after Bioware officially teased the next game in the series at the 2020 Game Awards, which will apparently feature fan favorite Liara T’Soni in a story involving both the Milky Way galaxy and the story of Mass Effect: Andromeda. But it’s not exactly clear in what way just yet.
