Deck Nine is developing the next game in the Life is Strange series called Life is Strange: True Colors.
As previously announced, True Colors will star a new protagonist rather than revisiting Max Caulfield, Chloe Price, and the Diaz brothers from previous games. This story follows Alex Chen, an Asian-American empath capable of feeling and manipulating the emotions of the people around her. Unlike Max in the first Life is Strange or Daniel in Life is Strange 2, Alex seems to have had her powers for most of her life, and knows how to use them by the time True Colors begins. Alex’s story will involve using her powers to discover the truth behind the death of her brother, who was believed to have died in an accident. But Alex believes otherwise.

Notably, True Colors won’t be released in an episodic format like the rest of the Life is Strange series, but will still be segmented into five chapters when it launches on September 10.
Deck Nine developed Life is Strange: Before the Storm, a prequel to the original game starring Chloe Price as the playable character. While it had its moments, I wasn’t really a fan of the studio’s take on original developer Dontnod’s characters. That’s why I’m more hopeful about True Colors, as the studio will be able to spread its wings with new characters rather than working in the confines of someone else’s.

It’s unclear if Dontnod is leaving behind the Life is Strange series with this move, or if Deck Nine will be alternating with it. Dontnod has made both numbered games in the series, including 2019 Game of the Year, Actually Life is Strange 2. The company recently opened a new studio based in Montreal, which is working on a new, unannounced project.
