If you’ve been playing Resident Evil: Resistance, the asymmetrical multiplayer mode that came with Resident Evil 3 Remake, you know that it has a cast of characters for you to pick from, each with their own abilities and strengths. You might have a favorite, and it’s probably Martin Sandwich, but Capcom announced today that it will be bringing new characters to the mode as DLC for your consideration, starting with Jill Valentine.
Jill will be making her shift from main game protagonist to multiplayer mode option next week on April 17. While she is the first character to be added to the mode, she won’t be the last. Another survivor will be added in May, and while we don’t have any specifics on who, the silhouette in the image Capcom posted on the Resident Evil Twitter looks vaguely male. Could it be Carlos? Or maybe Capcom could be planning to release some Resident Evil mainstays who aren’t in Resident Evil 3 Remake like Leon Kennedy or Chris Redfield. If the plan is to support Resident Evil: Resistance well into the future, as the roadmap implies, it would be interesting to see just how far into Resident Evil back catalog the roster could go. Give me Jack Krauser, Capcom.

While both April and May’s updates seem to be in the form of playable characters, that Capcom isn’t specific about what’s coming even in June implies that there could be content updates for Resident Evil: Resistance that go beyond the people you’re playing as. Whether that’s in new maps, modes, or features is unclear at this point, but Capcom clearly expects the multiplayer mode to have a long tail in whatever form it takes in a few months.
Resident Evil 3 Remake just launched last week, but the rumor mill has already given fans of the series something else to speculate about, because there have been reports that Resident Evil 8 could be coming out in 2021 as a cross-generation game. There hasn’t been a proper reveal yet, but reports are popping up that it will be a first-person perspective game along the lines of Resident Evil 7, and will bring back Ethan Winters as a main character. The game was originally meant to be announced at E3 2020, but as that was cancelled due to coronavirus concerns it means any official reveal will have to come in a different form.
Beyond the games, the Resident Evil franchise is also seemingly getting ready to enter the television world, as Netflix posted and then removed a synopsis for a Resident Evil TV series from its website back in February. No word on whether or not it will take place in the continuity of the games or the film series that concluded back in 2016, but Netflix has done pretty well with game adaptations lately, so hopefully anyone involved knows to handle it with care.
