Focus Home Acquires Streets of Rage 4 Publisher Dotemu

The company hopes to create more remakes and sequels of old properties with more backing.

Dotemu, the developer and publisher behind recent games like Streets of Rage 4 and the upcoming Metal Slug Tactics, has been acquired by Focus Home Interactive.

According to the press release on the acquisition, the deal was made to the tune of €38.5 million, which roughly equates to $46 million USD. The accompanying statement from Dotemu CEO Cyrille Imbert says that the deal will allow the company to “launch the production of future remakes and sequels of licenses of first-generation 3D consoles.” Does this mean Dotemu is going to be releasing games based on franchises that were popular during the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 era? We’ll have to wait and see.

Joining the Focus Home Interactive Group was an obvious choice for Dotemu. We share the same passion for video games, the same desire to improve, as well as the same values of respect and benevolence towards our partners and teams. While continuing its activities, this new collaboration will allow Dotemu to benefit from the incontestable expertise of Focus Home INteractive’s teams for the production of AA titles and therefore launch the production of future remakes and sequels of licenses of first-generation 3D consoles.

While retaining the editorial and strategic independence that has made it successful, Dotemu will be able to give even greater ambition to its projects and give itself the means to broaden the range of services offered to studios, in order to guarantee the success of their productions on the retro label as well as on the publishing label The Arcade Crew. Therefore, Dotemu is ideally positioned to achieve its ambitious growth plan to triple its turnover in the medium term.

My mission will also be to share Dotemu’s expertise with Focus Home Interactive’s teams, to select and convince talented teams to join the Group in order to build, together, a key player in the video game industry global scale.

In an interview with IGN, Imbert spoke of possible IP Dotemu would like to explore on the other side of the acquisition, and cited some action franchises like Terminator and Indiana Jones as points of interest.

“I think that it would be interesting to explore classic movies like, I don’t know, Indiana Jones, Terminator… the kind of stuff that never really had their very cool retro game back in the days — it was always promotional games and there were usually not that good,” Imbert told IGN. “And Conan, for example, I love Conan. I’d love to do a Conan game.”

Dotemu is currently working on the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge.
