Look, I’m sure there are plenty of exciting things happening at today’s Gamescom presentation, but shut the fuck to all of them because we finally got an update on the next Dragon Age game. It still doesn’t have a name, but Dorian Pavus is gonna be in it so do not talk to me about anything else.
The four-minute long developer diary jumped around between multiple sides of Bioware’s team as they talked about what they were up to on the as-of-yet-untitled fourth Dragon Age, but there was enough to get a sense of some things that are going on to the eagle eyed fan, including the return of series’ favorites Dorian Pavus and Solas, which means myself and Fanbyte Featured Contribute Natalie Flores are ascending to a higher plane of existence. Admittedly, there’s not much in terms of concrete details about what the game is about and who it’s going to star (it should be in the Inquisitor), but we did see some in-progress footage, video of some motion capture, and clips of voice actors recording their lines from the comfort of their quarantined homes.

This mystery fourth Dragon Age game was officially announced at The Game Awards in 2018, and Bioware has mostly been silent on it until this moment, short of the occasional promise that the game was still making progress on social media. It’s currently been marketed with the tagline “The Dread Wolf Rises,” referencing Solas’ ascension to the main villain after his role as a party member in Dragon Age: Inquisition. This storyline was moved forward a bit in the anthology novel Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights. But beyond that, we still don’t really know what’s going on or what the game will even look like. There’s been speculation and reports that the game is being retooled with live service elements akin to Bioware’s latest game Anthem, but that game is the last Bioware project that studio needs to learn from.

For now, I’m just gonna gawk over this concept art featuring my Dragon Age boyfriend Dorian Pavus. Look at him swimming toward what looks like some treasure. The king of underwater exploration. Eat your heart out Michael Phelps.
In the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t much, and Bioware’s Casey Hudson said at the beginning of the video that the game is still in early development, so it makes sense that we wouldn’t be getting a full blown trailer this time around. It’s at least better than EA Play, during which Bioware was essentially absent beyond footage of the next Dragon Age’s environment showing up in a montage. Here’s hoping that by this time next year we’ll have an actual sense of what the future of Dragon Age looks like.
