Avengers Solves Unforced Error By Removing XP Boost Microtransactions

The community did not take kindly to the addition.

Crystal Dynamics, surprised that fans did not react positively to new microtransactions being added to Marvel’s Avengers, is walking back that decision.

The studio announced as much on its social channels, where it confirmed it would be removing Hero’s Catalyst and Fragment Extractor, two consumables that could be bought in Marvel’s Avengers’ in-game marketplace. These items boosted player experience, letting you power up your various heroes more quickly than the game’s usual grind. However, it also contradicted Crystal Dynamics’ own promises that the game’s real-world money microtransactions would be exclusively for cosmetic, non-gameplay-related items. Thus, the backlash. As such, these items will be gone by the end of the day, though anyone who bought them already will still be able to use them and they can be earned through non-monetary means.

The full statement reads as follows:

We apologize for not responding sooner to your concerns about the addition of paid consumables in the Marketplace. We introduced them as an option for an evolving player base, and did not see them as pay-to-win since they don’t offer power directly.

After considering your feedback, we have decided that by the end of today we will remove Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase. They will continue to be earnable rewards and those already owned are still usable.

We hope that this can be the first step in rebuilding your confidence in us as a team.

It continues to be our goal to make the very best game possible. Thank you for being part of the Marvel’s Avengers community.

So that’s that. What is next for the little live service game that could? After the recent Black Panther expansion, who’s to say? Wait, wasn’t Spider-Man supposed to be in this game?

Anyway, that Guardians of the Galaxy game is pretty good.
