A New Nier Replicant Remake Trailer Is A Closer Look

Everyone is so pretty now.

Square Enix has seemingly decided to open the Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 faucets and start releasing a torrent of footage for the upcoming remaster/remake of 2010’s Nier. Today, courtesy of the Nier twitter account, we get a look at the shot-for-shot remake of the first game’s attract screen with new graphics, new voices, and new music.

So, one, everyone is really pretty now. That’s not a good or bad thing, it’s just a thing. Everyone is just strikingly far more attractive than they were eleven years ago. I think some part of me appreciated the fact that everyone had weird faces in the original because it was such a broken, destitute world but maybe that’s just me trying to justify a bad thing about a game I liked before and being defensive when it is changed. Who knows.

Two, this is a shot-for-shot remake of the original intro, and I always forget how much the original intro just goes hog-fucking-wild on spoiling the game. Sure, without context, none of that means much, but wow. Even without context, if you look too hard, you can piece together a decent number of twists, so maybe don’t do that.

Finally, the fact that they are willing to show this as a pre-release trailer now that they know people have context for it really makes me think they’re going to pull a swerve in this game. Maybe this will include an integration of Grimoire Nier, a post-release book of information and short stories, into Ending D. I think there’s no way this game is “just” a remake of the original game, though.

Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 will be released on Apr. 23 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC. There has been no news about enhancements, either through backwards compatibility or otherwise, for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.
