A Long Journey to An Uncertain End is a ‘Radically Inclusive’ Management Space Opera

From veterans of Obsidian and Telltale.

Crispy Creative, a studio made up of Obsidian and Telltale alumni, has unveiled its first game called A Long Journey to an Uncertain End, and the studio is pitching the management game as a space opera with diversity at its core.

The announcement trailer only shows a brief shot of what gameplay will actually look like in A Long Journey to an Uncertain End, but pausing at the right time gives us a sense of what we’ll actually be managing: the crew of a sentient ship. Oh, and the ship is you. You are the ship.

In the first few seconds of the video, we can see crew members being assigned to a mission in a town square to help local businesses that are struggling. Each adventurer in your merry band of misfits has their own skills, so picking the right ones to send out on jobs is paramount to your success. While we don’t get to see the actual mission take place as it will in the final game, we do get treated to a nice animated reenactment that gives you a sense of the characters’ personalities and how a job like this that seems simple can go terribly wrong. This sends the group of lovable rogues back into the gaping maw of the ship and running away from the locals.

Apparently this is all in the name of escaping an abusive ex, and while you might have your own reasons for wanting to always be picking up odd jobs and on the move, the members of your crew are their own people with their own motivations that have to be kept happy. So the cast isn’t going to just be stats attached to a pretty face, you’ll have to make sure you’re in tune with who they are and what they want.

Oh, and apparently there’s going to be a Corgi OS helper named C.O.R.G.I. Given that ze is part of the ship’s OS and we are technically the ship in A Long Journey to an Uncertain End, there might be some scenario where we can Pet The Dog.

A Long Journey to an Uncertain End is coming to PC in 2021, and is currently available to wishlist on its Steam page.

Crispy Creative was founded in 2017 by former Obsidian UI Designer Kylan Coats, originally to work on UI designs for other games. A Long Journey to an Uncertain End is the studio’s first original IP, and it says it wants the game, like all of its projects to be “radically inclusive, not only in the stories told or the characters brought to life, but with the people telling those stories.” This is already pretty apparent in some of the social media posts the studio has been putting out leading up to the official reveal, which include diversity in gender presentation, pronouns, and seeing a character who uses a futuristic wheelchair in the first trailer.
