13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Announced for Nintendo Switch

The once PS4 exclusive launches in April.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is no longer only on PlayStation 4. Atlus revealed the Vanillaware side-scroller will see a worldwide release for Nintendo Switch on April 12, 2022, and launch in Japan two days later on April 14.

The reveal came during 13 Sentinels’ 2nd-anniversary livestream event, where Atlus noted the original PS4 version is what you’ll receive on Switch. So it doesn’t sound like there’s much difference to expect from the Nintendo port, but the livestream did also note this version comes packaged with PS4 limited edition DLC like the special files and character artwork. Perhaps worldwide and Japan releases will vary, but Atlus did show off a peek at the new packaging.

If you missed it before, 13 Sentinels launched in Japan on November 28, 2019, before going global in 2020. Vanillaware originally had PlayStation Vita plans for its RTS side scroller, but those were canned at the end of the handheld’s life cycle—so a Switch launch really does seem like the natural progression here.

I didn’t get to finish 13 Sentinels—not because it’s bad, but just because life is hellish and busy—but what I did play felt like a classic Vanillaware banger. That classic, studio signature art style harkens back to favorites like Odin Sphere or Muramasa, both of which I endlessly played over and over on Vita. While I liked how some of their older games played more, 13 Sentinels’ cast, ’80s atmosphere, and giant mechs kept me hooked for a while. I’ll at least try to beat it again on Switch next year.
