The great thing about Super Mario games is that there is no clear front-runner for “Best Game Evar!!1!”. Everyone has their own personal favorite Mario adventure, making your choice just as unique as your fingerprint! But what does your favorite Mario game say about you? Scholars have pondered the question for ages (roughly since 1985) and it turns out Mario might even know you better than you know yourself.
Your answer will reveal information held deep within the unconscious mind. How you interact with the world, how you see yourself, what beliefs you hold true — all of this and more can be derived simply by examining what your favorite title is in the Super Mario series. But keep in mind, this test can only have so many variables. As such, this list will only include “mainline” Mario outings, so no Mario Golf, no Mario Party, no Mario Does the Dishes.
So, close your eyes. Imagine Mario’s smiling face popping out of the ether, and ask yourself: “What is my favorite Mario game”. Do you have your answer? Good. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Now without further ado: Let’s-a-go! (And if you want to know what your favorite Zelda game says about you, we’ve got you covered there too.)
Super Mario Bros.
You can’t beat the classics, right? For a game that’s almost 40 years old, it still plays pretty good! If this is your favorite, you might be getting up there in age too, but you handle just as well as you did “back in the day.” You’re wearing a graphic tee with an NES controller on it right now, aren’t you?
Good Point: Timeless
Bad Point: Stuck in the glory days
Super Mario Bros. 2 / Super Mario USA
“Did you know that in J-?” Yes, we all know. Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally a game called Doki Doki Panic in Japan and, well, if you’re reading this you already know that too. You might be the oddball in the friend group. A little off, yet ever so familiar. But it doesn’t matter, because you’ll always be who you say you are in the eyes of those who love you.
Good Point: Quick with a fun little party fact
Bad Point: Old nicknames still stick
Super Mario Bros. 2 / The Lost Levels — Your Favorite Mario Game?
You’re a glutton for punishment, and easily forgotten. You hang out next to the popular guy at the party, but you’re just a bit meaner. As such, you don’t always get invited out with the others, unless it’s for an anniversary event. Still, we have to recognize your place in history. You made us cry and yell with rage so many times, but no one can deny you’re still a good hang.
Good Point: Always up for a challenge
Bad Point: Poisoner
Super Mario Bros. 3
You give everything your all, and challenge the systems in place. You strive to improve upon that which came before you. After all, there are so many horizons in this world to explore! You’re not afraid to try on new hats, or new costumes for that matter. Land, sea, air, it doesn’t matter. The world is your oyster.
Good Point: Well-refined
Bad Point: Forgets age sometimes
Super Mario Land
You show up to a party, and people forget they invited you. But you’re still determined to prove yourself, always on the go. You’re flexible, no matter the limitations in place. You are the little engine that could.
Good Point: Great roadtrip buddy
Bad Point: Black-and-white thinking
Super Mario World — Your Favorite Mario Game?
You are a perfectionist — always believing there’s still room to grow. You’re not afraid to ask for help from others, either. You’re quick to adapt, and willing to evolve with the ever-changing times. Sometimes you like to explore off the beaten path, because you never know what kind of secrets you’ll find.
Good Point: Always down for whatever
Bad Point: Easily lost in the woods
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
You love to travel, even though you pack a lot. You’re always eccentric, quick with a surprise up your sleeve at every turn. You’re the weird cousin in the family, but when people finally sit down to talk with you at dinner, they have a lot of fun. You don’t mind not being the center of attention — you’re always doing your own thing.
Good Point: Individualism
Bad Point: Lack of energy
Super Mario 64
You’re bold, seeing life without borders. You’re a bit of a loner, but always a crowd-pleaser. Exploring and getting lost is an active past-time for you. You really like that “liminal spaces” Twitter account, and people can’t stop being obsessed with you in spite of, or perhaps because, you’re a little creepy.
Good Point: Forward thinking
Bad Point: Rough around the edges
Super Mario Sunshine — Your Favorite Mario Game?
You’re afraid of commitment. To you, life is one big vacation. You’re always prattling on about the beach, and the places you’ve traveled to. Some people can’t seem to totally figure you out. You’re divisive — people either love you, or they hate you. But no one can deny your cleanliness.
Good Point: Smells like the the ocean
Bad Point: Pachinko addict
New Super Mario Bros.
Fine, you’ll give in. You’ll cave and give the people what they want like you always do. But that’s not totally a bad thing, because sometimes others know best. You’re warm and familiar, and that’s good enough, isn’t it?
Good Point: Great listener
Bad Point: Excessive people pleaser
Super Mario Galaxy
You’re an entrepreneur. You just made a lot of money, and one day you’re going to do what every rich person dreams of doing — going into space. Your head may be a bit in the clouds, but you’re not afraid to shake things up a bit. People expect greatness from you, and you’re determined to show them what you’re made of.
Good Point: Larger than life
Bad Point: Low definition
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
You’re very by-the-books. Others know exactly what to expect when they invite you over, but some people may find you a little boring. There’s nothing wrong with sticking to the status quo sometimes, and besides, you’re best in a group anyway.
Good Point: Makes friends easily
Bad Point: Hates to be alone
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Others may think you’re just doing what is expected of you, but you are shockingly ambitious. You’re what everyone loves and more, and tons of fun to hang out with. People may still wonder what’s next when they’re in your presence, but you’ll keep everyone entertained regardless.
Good Point: A blast to be around
Bad Point: Bees
Super Mario 3D Land — Your Favorite Mario Game?
You know the phrase “good things come in small packages”? Yeah, that’s you. You’re full of energy and ideas, and people would be wrong to underestimate you. You’re ambitious within your own limitations, but not everyone is out here trying to reinvent the wheel anyway.
Good Point: Refreshingly familiar
Bad Point: Blurry vision
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Always with the get-rich-quick schemes, but none of the ambition. Your parents expect the least out of you, and you prove them right time and time again. When are you going to do something with your life?
Good Point: Looks good in gold
Bad Point: It’s fake
New Super Mario Bros. U
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is your motto. Your friends love to hang out with you, but they’d be lying if they said it didn’t get a little stale sometimes. You tell a lot of the same jokes and stories over and over, sometimes with a fresh coat of paint, but the ending is always the same. No one seems to hate you at least?
Good Point: Inoffensive
Bad Point: Repetitive
Super Mario 3D World
You’ve had a couple slip-ups in the past, but your friends are rooting for you. It seems like you might be heading in the right direction, so others are willing to give you a chance. Sometimes it feels like baby steps, but it’s important that others remain patient with you. You’ve got a lot to offer in the way of traditional wisdom, yet you also remain open-minded.
Good Point: Goal-oriented
Bad Point: Covered in cat hair
Super Mario Odyssey
You’ve got years of experience in your field of expertise, and there’s never a dull moment with you. “It’s time for a comeback” is a phrase that’s crossed your mind many times in your life. Others have described you as charismatic. You’re worldly, always a globetrotter. Your ambition may be your downfall though, because once you ride high, you disappear for a while.
Good Point: Wears many hats
Bad Point: Copycat
You’re here for a good time, not a long time.
Good Point: Dynamo
Bad Point: Finishes quickly
