Time for the fifth issue of Fanbyte’s Staff Pet of the Month! It’s exactly what it sounds like and we’re all going to get to gush to you about all our furry/scaly/feathered little children and you all get to see some sick pics of cute animals.
Full name: Gilmer
Owner: Collin MacGregor, Guide Writer
Nicknames: Gillie, Gillie Monster
Likes: Sleeping, people watching, making blanket forts on the bed, silently staring at me from a distance as she most likely plans my death if I don’t give her attention.
Dislikes: Birds, giving too many belly rubs, any type of loud machinery, people
Talents: Doing literally nothing. Honestly, it’s astounding how little she actually does around here. I know she’s a cat, but Gillie can’t even be asked to deal with pests. We had a cricket in our apartment once and instead of asserting dominance over this tiny, harmless insect, she just stood there. Seriously, the cat just watched the cricket from a distance as if she was on a goddamn safari.
Weaknesses: Getting scratched under her chin, having her body covered in a warm blanket, human suffering
Gillie is a Maine Coon mix who I was introduced to when I started dating my partner back in 2010. While I lived with cats before, Gillie was the first one to actually take an interest in me. She is a deeply possessive cat that doesn’t like any other animals getting close to the people she lives with. Honestly, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t even like it when my partner and I hang out without her. Every time we lounge on the couch, she either forces her way onto the ottoman (even if there’s no room) or just glares at us from a distance.
But this isn’t her only weird quirk. Perhaps one of the strangest aspects of Gillie is she hates her own scent. For example, if she gets a whiff of her own fur on a brush you’ll become her enemy for the next couple of hours. Even her veterinarian doesn’t understand why’s she like this. Gillie also needs all treats, no matter the situation, to be placed directly in front of her. If any food source is placed above her (even if she witnesses me putting it there), that treat no longer exists and I’m an evil wizard making her snacks vanish.
Also here’s a picture of her in a tiny cowboy hat which she absolutely hates wearing.
I love this big, fluffy dork though. Despite her appearing rather cold and detached from us, she has a habit of always cheering me up. She loves to cuddle if you catch her in the right mood — especially if we’re on the bed and I let her have all the blankets. Before her, I never had a pet that was basically my own to care for. Maybe that’s why I am so protective of her or put up with her annoying crying at four in the morning. She’s my weirdo, one that I love to spend time with whenever I’m relaxing. While she has some interesting habits, Gillie still manages to put a smile on my face whenever she’s around.
