After a trademark registration and weeks of rumors, Toei Company has finally revealed the next Kamen Rider in the long-running Japanese meta-franchise. Kamen Rider Geats is the next series, premiering later in 2022. Geats will be the 33rd Kamen Rider series and the fourth Rider of the Reiwa era.
The first reveal of Geats came on the poster and synopsis for the tentatively-named Kamen Rider Winter Movie 2022, which will be a crossover between the upcoming hero and the current Rider, Kamen Rider Revice. This will follow the first appearance of Geats in the upcoming film Kamen Rider Revice: Battle Familia on July 22. After that, Kamen Rider Geats will air on September 2, 2022, in Japan.
The poster reveal was followed by an official site on TV Asahi, which gave us a better look at Geats and a synopsis for his series. His mask sports a Kitsune motif, based on the Japanese myths of supernatural, shapeshifting fox yokai. On the neck of his armor are what appear to be three tomoe, a design referred to as the mitsudomoe, sometimes related to the Japanese goddess of the sun, Amaterasu. The motif carries on in Geats’ Rider scarf, which resembles the kitsune’s tail.
The rest of Geats has a swank red and white color scheme split into two halves. His white top half gives way to his Rider belt, which then transitions to red-colored bottom half with exhaust pipes coming out from his leg armor. The two-toned theme seems to point to Geats drawing on two sources of power, similar to previous Riders like Kamen Rider W or Kamen Rider Build.
The poster gives the name of Geats’ belt, the Desire Driver. According to the synopsis on the official site, Hidetoshi Ukiyo will put on the Desire Driver to compete in the Desire Grand Prix. This competition sees people transforming into Kamen Riders to defeat monsters and save people in order to win. What do they win? How about the ability to create the world they desire? Yeah, that’s appropriately superheroic.
If that sounds familiar, that’s because the survival game is a long-running genre staple that’s recently gotten a lot of play. The official Kamen Rider Geats page directly mentions Fortnite and Apex Legends, noting that survival games are pretty popular with children and calling Geats a “bold fusion” of the genre and Kamen Rider. We’ve had a lot of survival game adaptations recently, including television shows like Squid Games and Alice in the Borderland, or anime like Tomodachi Game and Platinum End. Hell, Kamen Rider isn’t even unfamiliar with the survival game, with that being the focus of 2002’s Kamen Rider Ryuki and 2013’s Kamen Rider Gaim. The truth is it’s pretty exciting to watch a bunch of random characters kill each other, especially if you actually care about some of them.
Kamen Rider Geats is one of the most striking Rider designs I’ve seen in a long time, but also in line with the minimalist style of the first Reiwa Rider, Kamen Rider Zero-One. I’m looking forward to seeing more Riders from the show, the full cast, and the production team behind the series. We should hear more about the Rider soon, as the official site says there will be a follow-up report and we normally find out all of the details in a Japanese press conference preceding the show’s launch.
